Laura Ekada (Nulato Tribe)
Post Bacc Student
Raised in Minto, Alaska, and a member of the Nulato tribe, I am an avid runner, reader, and lifter who enjoys crocheting and thrifting. My journey took me from Mt. Edgecumbe High School to Umpqua Community College—where I ran cross country and track—and finally to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where I earned my B.S. in Biology. After graduating, I spent two years serving as a caregiver. I am currently a Nmryaq Scholar at Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. Following this one-year program, I will receive conditional acceptance into their medical school. I am taking MCAT preparatory classes and other fun classes on campus. I will take my MCAT in January 2026. My medical school interview was in December 2025. August 2026 will be my white coat ceremony.
My dream of becoming a physician began at age 15 while shadowing at Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center. Inspired by the Native physicians who came before me, I am committed to addressing the need for doctors in my community. I aim to return to interior Alaska to champion wellness and prevention, improve clinic work environments, and help patients navigate the complexities of healthcare and insurance.
