Helaena Biller (Quinault Indian Nation and Filipino) - Pre-Nursing Student
Project Title: Uplifting Non-Linear Journeys Into Healthcare
Helaena Biller, a citizen of the Quinault Indian Nation, recently completed her associate’s degree in pre-nursing and has begun applying to BSN programs to become a registered nurse—with plans to eventually become a nurse practitioner. Raised in Tacoma, Washington, Helaena has used her experience in the Healers Community Circle to reflect deeply on her educational journey and support others doing the same.
With support from the We Are Healers stipend, Helaena was able to cover application fees, purchase textbooks, and access other essential materials to support her nursing school goals.
For her project, Helaena interviewed classmates and coworkers about their educational journeys—focusing on those who, like her, have taken non-traditional paths into healthcare. Through these conversations, she uncovered powerful shared experiences: many had retaken courses, faced rejection from programs, or entered healthcare education later in life.
“I used to beat myself up over test scores and retaking classes. I thought maybe nursing wasn’t for me. But when I started talking to others, I realized I wasn’t alone—we all face obstacles, and many of us are still pushing forward.”
This project not only uplifted the voices of others navigating similar journeys—it also helped Helaena affirm her place in healthcare and celebrate the resilience, determination, and shared strength within her community of aspiring health professionals.
A Message to Future Healers:
“Every journey is different. Don’t compare your path to anyone else’s.
It’s never too late to pursue your dreams—and you are not alone in the challenges you face.”
